Frequently asked questions

Materials led the market on Tuesday, Jul 14 at +0.82%.

How is sector performance measured here?
Each sector's figure is the MEDIAN day % move of its liquid stocks (price of $1+ and at least $1M in dollar volume) from Tuesday, Jul 14, split-adjusted. The median — the typical stock — is used instead of an average so a single penny-stock spike can't distort a whole sector. Stocks are grouped into sectors by their SIC industry classification.
What do advancers and decliners mean?
Advancers are the number of stocks in that sector that finished up on the session; decliners finished down. This "breadth" is often a cleaner read on sector health than the headline number — a sector can have a positive median but weak breadth (a few big winners carrying it), or vice-versa.
What is sector rotation?
Sector rotation is money moving from one part of the market to another as conditions change — for example out of high-growth Technology into defensive Consumer Staples or Utilities when traders turn cautious. Watching which sectors lead and lag day to day is how many traders spot rotation early.
Which sectors are there?
The board groups the market into coarse sectors: Technology, Communication Services, Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Health Care, Financials, Industrials, Energy, Materials, Real Estate, and Utilities. Classification is by SIC code and is heuristic, not GICS-exact. This page is information, not investment advice.
How often does it update?
It refreshes each session from the latest completed trading day. For live intraday action, use the RVOL and halt scanners and the Stock Market Today board across the rest of the site.
