Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about today’s most volatile stocks by ATR% on TheDesperateTrader.
- What are the most volatile stocks today?
- The most volatile stocks are those with the largest average daily price swing, ranked by ATR% from Friday, Jul 17. ATR% measures how much a stock typically moves in a session as a percentage of its price, so a high value means big, tradable intraday ranges. Day traders watch these because the moves are large enough to trade.
- What does ATR% mean?
- ATR (Average True Range) is the average size of a stock's daily range over the last 14 sessions, including overnight gaps. Expressed as a percent of the current price (ATR%), it is an apples-to-apples volatility gauge across stocks at any price: an ATR% of 10% means the stock swings about 10% of its value on an average day.
- How is this list filtered?
- We compute ATR%(14) from daily highs, lows and closes across every U.S. stock, then keep only liquid names (price of $2+ and at least $3M in dollar volume in the latest session) and remove leveraged and inverse ETFs, so the list surfaces real, tradable stocks rather than illiquid microcaps or 2x/3x ETF products. Results update daily.
- Are volatile stocks riskier?
- Yes. Higher volatility means larger moves in both directions, so position sizing and stop placement matter more. Volatility is a measure of movement, not direction or quality. This list is a scan of what is moving, not investment advice.
