What makes a stock good for day trading?

A day trade needs two things the rest of the market does not always offer: movement and liquidity. Movement gives you a range to work; liquidity lets you get in and out without slippage eating the trade. Both show up as volume, which is why day traders scan for it first.

The company itself matters less than whether it is in play today. A quiet large cap is a worse day trade than a small cap reacting to fresh news on ten times its normal volume.

How to find day trading stocks

The dependable early signal is relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the average for that exact minute of the day. An RVOL of 3x is three times the normal pace. Ranking by RVOL surfaces the names genuinely in motion right now rather than just the biggest companies, which always trade the most shares.

This scanner does that across every U.S. stock in real time. For the mechanics of the ratio and the level 1 to 5 breakdown, the RVOL scanner is the same live data explained from the relative-volume angle, and momentum stocks frames it for continuation traders.

Questions

Frequently asked

What are the best stocks for day trading?
A stock worth day trading is one that is actually moving today, with real volume behind it: enough range to trade and enough liquidity to get in and out cleanly. Size and sector matter less than whether the name is in play. High relative volume on a fresh catalyst is the combination most day traders look for, which is why this scanner leads with the volume signal.
How do I find day trading stocks in real time?
The earliest reliable signal is relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the stock's own average for that exact minute of the day. Volume spikes before a move is obvious on the chart, so ranking every U.S. stock by RVOL surfaces the movers as they begin rather than after they have run. This scanner does exactly that, live.
What time of day is best to day trade these?
The first 30 to 60 minutes after the 9:30 AM ET open is usually the most active window, when the day's movers establish their range. Pre-market from 4:00 AM catches gappers early, and after-hours catches earnings reactions. This scanner runs from 4:00 AM ET through 8:00 PM ET so you see all three.
Do I need a big account to day trade these stocks?
In the U.S., pattern day trader rules require a minimum of $25,000 in a margin account to place four or more day trades in five business days. That is a regulatory fact, not our rule, and it is worth knowing before you start. The scanner itself is free to use regardless of account size.
Are day trading stocks risky?
Yes. A stock that moves fast up can move fast down, and low-float names are especially volatile. This scanner flags movement and volume, not a direction, and it is information, not advice. Your entry, stop and exit decide the outcome. Know why a stock is moving before you act on it.
How much does it cost?
The scanner is free to view. New accounts also start with 5 free premium days of the full live dashboard, real-time alerts and WebSocket delivery, with no credit card required at signup. After that, premium runs at an early-access price of $24.99/month.
