What Is Unusual Volume?

Unusual volume is trading activity well outside a stock's own normal range for the time of day. It is relative, not absolute: a few hundred thousand shares can be extraordinary for a quiet small cap and unremarkable for a mega cap. That is why raw share counts mislead and a ratio does not.

When volume runs far above normal, someone knows something or thinks they do. It is the earliest, most honest signal that a name is in play, often before the news that explains it is public.

How to Find Unusual Volume Stocks

The dependable method is relative volume (RVOL): current volume divided by the average volume for that exact minute of the day. An RVOL of 3x is three times the normal pace. Ranking by RVOL surfaces the genuinely unusual names rather than just the biggest companies, which always trade the most shares.

This scanner does that across every U.S. stock in real time. If you want the mechanics of the ratio and the level 1 to 5 breakdown, the RVOL scanner is the same live data explained from the relative-volume angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does unusual volume mean in stocks?

Unusual volume is when a stock trades far more (or far less) than it normally would for that time of day. It is measured against the stock's own history, not a fixed number, so 500,000 shares can be unusual for a quiet small cap and completely normal for a mega cap. A spike in volume usually means new information, a catalyst, or a technical break has pulled in buyers or sellers who were not there an hour ago.

What causes unusual volume in a stock?

The most common triggers are news and earnings, an SEC filing, an analyst upgrade or downgrade, a sector move, a short squeeze, or a technical breakout that trips other traders' alerts. Sometimes there is no public reason yet and the volume is the first sign something is happening. This scanner flags the volume; the stock's own page shows the catalyst where one is known.

How do you scan for unusual volume stocks?

The reliable way is relative volume (RVOL), the ratio of current volume to the stock's average volume for that exact minute of the day. An RVOL of 3x means three times the normal pace. This scanner ranks every U.S. stock by RVOL in real time, so the names at the top are the ones most unusual right now rather than just the largest companies. The same live data powers our RVOL scanner.

Is unusual volume bullish or bearish?

Neither on its own. Volume measures conviction and attention, not direction. Unusual volume on a stock breaking to new highs reads very differently from the same volume on a stock breaking down. Use it to find where the action is, then read price and the catalyst to judge which way it points.

Does this cover pre-market and after-hours?

Yes. Scanning runs from 4:00 AM ET through 8:00 PM ET, so you can catch unusual pre-market volume on a gapper before the 9:30 open and after-hours reactions to earnings once the close is in.

How much does it cost?

The scanner is free to view. New accounts also start with 5 free premium days of the full live dashboard, real-time alerts and WebSocket delivery, with no credit card required at signup. After that, premium runs at an early-access price of $24.99/month.
