What Is RVOL? Relative Volume Explained
RVOL is the single most important volume metric for day traders. Here's exactly what it means, how it's calculated, and how to use it to find stocks worth trading.
The Simple Definition
RVOL (Relative Volume) compares how much a stock is trading right now to how much it normally trades at the same time of day.
An RVOL of 5.0x means the stock is trading at five times its normal pace. An RVOL of 1.0x means perfectly average volume. Below 1.0x means slower than usual.
Why Minute-by-Minute Baseline Matters
A crude RVOL formula compares current volume to the daily average. This is misleading: pre-market volume is naturally 90%+ lower than midday volume. A 4 AM stock with 3x its “daily average” might just be normal pre-market activity.
The correct approach is a minute-by-minute baseline — comparing the current 9:47 AM candle against the historical average of every 9:47 AM candle from recent sessions. This gives a genuinely accurate signal no matter when you're looking.
RVOL Levels: What Each Range Means
Slightly Elevated
Routine. Not worth acting on alone.
Level 1 — Watch
Elevated. Could be building momentum. Worth monitoring.
Level 2 — Significant
Meaningful spike. Often precedes a tradeable move or breakout.
Level 3 — Strong
High probability of intraday momentum. Look for a catalyst.
Level 4 — Exceptional
Something is happening. News, squeeze, or institutional order.
Level 5 — Extreme
Maximum urgency. Possible halt, news catalyst, or short squeeze in progress.
How Day Traders Use RVOL
1. Pre-market scanning (4 AM – 9:30 AM ET)
Filter for RVOL above 3x in pre-market. These are the gappers and early movers. Stocks with high pre-market RVOL often continue momentum after the open.
2. Confirming a catalyst
News hits. Volume spikes. RVOL 8x+. This combination — catalyst + extreme volume — is the setup many momentum traders wait for. The RVOL confirms the market is reacting, not just making noise.
3. Halt watch
Stocks that halt (LULD, T1, circuit breakers) almost always have very high RVOL on resume. Watching RVOL alerts alongside halt alerts gives you a heads-up before the halt lifts.
4. 200 EMA context
RVOL spikes on stocks above their 200 EMA are generally more bullish setups than spikes on stocks below the EMA. Knowing the long-term trend helps you bias your direction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is RVOL in stocks?
RVOL (Relative Volume) is the ratio of a stock's current trading volume to its historical average volume for the same time of day. An RVOL of 5.0x means the stock is trading at five times its normal pace — a significant signal that unusual activity is occurring.
How is RVOL calculated?
RVOL = Current Volume ÷ Historical Average Volume (for the same minute of the day). The best RVOL scanners use a minute-by-minute baseline — the average volume for that specific minute across recent sessions — rather than the crude daily average. This accounts for the natural rhythm of the trading day, where pre-market volume is much lower than midday volume.
What RVOL is considered high?
RVOL of 2x–3x is elevated but common. RVOL of 4x–6x is a strong signal worth watching. RVOL of 6x–10x indicates exceptional activity, often tied to news or a catalyst. RVOL above 10x is extreme — these stocks are getting attention from the whole market.
How do day traders use RVOL?
Day traders use RVOL to filter the universe of 11,000+ stocks down to a handful showing unusual volume. High RVOL often precedes momentum moves. Traders combine RVOL with price action, news catalysts, and technical levels like the 200 EMA to decide whether to enter a trade.
Does high RVOL guarantee a big move?
No. High RVOL signals unusual interest, not a guaranteed direction. A stock can have 10x RVOL while slowly grinding or chopping. RVOL is a filter — it tells you where to look, not what to do. Always combine with price action context.
